Fate Eppie 2002 Award Winner Possessed by the spirit of a murdered woman, a writer tries to save the victim's son. Available from Amazon.com in paperback format, or as an e-book. Reviews: 4 Stars This is a thriller you don't want to miss. 3 Plugs From Chapter one: It was happening again, the events strange and terrifying, yet eerily familiar. She was speeding down a rain-slick mountain road, darkness thickening around her until she could see little more than a narrow strip of asphalt hemmed in by rock walls. Memories came unbidden, flashing into awareness like struck matches: a woman trying to tell her something, her words snatched away by a wind; a man leaning on a cane; a boy crying out to her, "Why do you have to go, mom? Let somebody else do it! Why does it always have to be you?" And suddenly, with the abrupt transition of a dream, a pickup truck closed in behind her, blinding her with its high beams. The driver crowded her like a madman, squeezing in beside her so that she had to veer across the dividing line to avoid a collision. Then she spotted a car shooting around the next turn, hurtling toward her like a missile. She braked hard, squinting against the glare of the oncoming lights as she skidded out of control. Everything blurred together in a harsh, white radiance--the jagged cliff-edge beyond the guard rail, the car racing towards her, the pickup truck surging past her on a gravel cut-off. Then the man in the truck turned to grin at her through a screen of rain and darkness, and she realized with a thrill of pure horror that she knew him. She tore at the wheel, but it was too late, too late! There was the distant blare of a horn, then something slammed into her chest with the force of an explosion. "Danny! Danny!" she cried, and the car was gone, and she herself was gone; there was only a blurred image of a face glimmering in the darkness. "Danny, Danny...." |
